Honoring our Red Wagon Award Winner: Liz Steinhauser!

The Red Wagon Award is considered MPF's highest honor and recognizes an individual that embodies our mission and supports the development of emerging leaders, acting as a role model for the Fellowship community and advocating for young people. Liz is a long-time friend of MPF and Fellow supervisor at St. Stephen's Youth Programs who has dedicated her career to being an advocate for youth.  The Reverend Liz Steinhauser joined St. Stephen's staff as the Director of Youth Programs in August 2003. She brings over 30 years of professional training and experience as a youth worker and community organizer to the position.  As Lead Organizer of the Boston Youth Organizing Project, Liz developed the leadership of over 750 youth. Together, they won $1 million for additional textbooks in high school classrooms, new procedures for cleaner bathrooms in the schools, and longer hours of free public transportation for students. She also did labor organizing with the Service Employees International Union in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, building a union of school support workers and in Boston, Massachusetts mobilizing community support for janitors.   Trained by Dr. Marshall Ganz, as well as the Industrial Areas Foundation, Liz has taught community organizing to graduate students at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, undergraduates at Stonehill College, and high schoolers in various organizations throughout Massachusetts.  Following the tragic shooting death of a St. Stephen’s teen in September 2012, Liz helped convene teens, young adults, and others to take leadership in the B-PEACE for Jorge Campaign, a diocese-wide effort to address the root causes of violence. Liberation theology developed her commitment to social justice.  Girl Scouts built her arts and crafts skills and her repertoire of goofy songs.  She is a graduate of Colgate University and Harvard Divinity School and is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. She lives in Roslindale with her modern family, including her twelve-year-old son, Heschel, who is working on his fencing and tae kwon do skills while studying to be an actor. "Liz has modeled what a strong partnership with the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship can look like. She has overseen the MPF partnership which has sent nine different Fellows to St. Stephen’s Youth Programs. Not only has she been the supervisor to many along the way, but she has continued to be a mentor, helping train Fellows so they are prepared for successful careers. St. Stephen’s is now hosting 2 Fellows for the first time. She is a firm believer in service, and has been a strong advocate for the partnership between St. Stephen’s and not only MPF, but also JOIN, VISTA, JVC and other service programs. She embodies all the core principles of MPF, and is always steering St. Stephen’s in the direction of providing young people with an effective education, caring adults, a safe place, a healthy start, and an opportunity to serve. In addition, she is a firm believer in not only helping to address the day to day needs of young people, but also working to create systemic change that will provide opportunities and increased access in the long run. She is a tremendous leader, strong partner to MPF, and a wonderful mentor to the many Fellows that have come to St. Stephens, where she has worked for 14 years."-Jeremy Kazanjian-Amory, MPF Alum
